1950 年代，許毅生因參加讀書會而被警總逮捕，出賣了友人陳桑，導致他遭到槍決。為此許長久痛苦內疚，決心於臨終前尋找其墳，向他致歉。萬仁透過虛構的故事，刻劃出白色恐怖倖存者儘管事過境遷但仍無法走出的苦痛，亦藉其他角色，揭示了不同主體的創傷經驗。此片為萬仁導演回望歷史、拼湊歷史記憶的力作，是其台灣三部曲的第二部。
Suspected of being a leftist, Ko spent around 30 years in prison and institutions, always obsessively worrying about the fate of his best friend Chen―executed in the 1950s. Soon after his release, Ko goes in search of the truth and a part of himself. Only when he learns the truth is he able to pay his respects. The film is the second of Wan Jen's Taiwan trilogy.
