本片為郭南宏武俠電影代表作。受胡金銓風格影響，全片場面調度精美、情節結構工整，成功塑造田鵬所飾演的一代劍王蔡穎傑，以及由上官靈鳳飾演的女俠飛燕子，並延伸出《十萬金山》及《武林龍虎鬥》等作品，足見當年受觀眾喜愛的程度。
Yun Chung-chun leads a gang to kill master swordsman Chang Shan-kong and steal a legendary sword, sparing only Chang's son, Tsai Ying-chieh. 18 years later, Tsai, now a master swordsman, seeks revenge. Poisoned and saved by female warrior Flying Swallow, he learns she is Yun's daughter, seeking to atone for her father's sins. Tsai Ying-chieh faces a dilemma: avenge his father or repay Flying Swallow for saving his life?
